Pops and Bangs on 1.8t

Hi everyone,

Got a question from someone relatively new to cars! I've got a 2009 Audi A3 1.8t, with recent full engine rebuild. I've got a custom stainless back box on there but everything else stock.

Wanting to do a stage 1 map on it soon, but I'm wondering if a Crackle and Pop overrun on it would be a bad move/wreck the engine? And would you recommend running the engine in before going forward with the map at least?

Definitely thinking of going with the map, but unsure if I should go for the pops and bangs or just leave that out for the sake of the engine!?

Depends. Are you planning to drive around narrow residential streets in the middle of the night like a tt, making a complete fking nuisance of yourself? If so, it's practically compulsory.

The rice krispie tune won't do any damage of note, if it's what you want to do, have fun. You're going to get a lot of abuse and then someone clever will suggest obvious troll is obvious, enjoy.

It will actually improve the combustion process, and release some power, win, win. Go for it and don't listen to the haters.

Its a bit over done these days, modern cars with exhausts that sound like gunfire is just a bit daft.

A little, occasional noise is ok but people take it too far and sound like utter tools.

Its a hatchback, it doesnt need to sound like that, no car does, some older cars would crackle on the overrun due to the way they worked and were tuned, as a byproduct rather than the aim, and now some did it so it did it a little bit and as with all things, some think it a little bit is ok, more is better and fking loads if awesome.

But it can make your car sound like a clown car, and its a bit last season....

Not many people, realise this,, but..

If you fold the rear seats down it lowers the centre of gravity loads.

And the light from neons underneath the car sucks it closer to the ground for even more stability round the corners..

No. pops and bangs won’t damage the engine but they may damage the cat converter

Whether it does any harm will depends on how it's achieved. The cheap and chearful way to product artificual pops on the overrun it is to briefly continue to inject fuel into the cylinders after the throttle closes; this will probably ultimately destroy your cat and might conceivably damage the exhaust side of the turbo.

It will also sound stupid, but that's obviously your decision.

Don't listen to these boring old farts, go for it mate, it will sound well sick.

I would get it done after running the engine in though. Best way to run it in quick is to go somewhere out of the way (to not annoy anyone) then bounce it off the limited in neutral for about 30 mins (something heavy on the pedal will help).

The map will probably have some overfuelling in it anyway, your presumably significantly less restrictive exhaust will be noisy (it's a turbo inline 4, it's sadly going to sound like hammered crap whatever you do) and when it's all been warmed up and thrashed and you lift off or down shift it may well release the odd little pop. That may be all you need to be satisfied

My own pointless suggestion, just save up for a car with a proper engine in it

If you want it to burble, you need unequal length exhaust manifold branches.

That's exactly what I'd do with a newly rebuilt engine on a car destined for for a pops 'n bangs exhaust too, but you'll find running in with a brick on the throttle is even more effective if you drain all the engine oil out first.

You could get all your pops 'n bangs mates together in Macky D's car park late one night - they won't mind at all - and all do it at once and see who's the quickest afterwards.
