Hey, guys

Its getting a bit colder in my place and, as people say, condensation is a normal thing at such period of time. Anyways, I took a look how the bottom of the oil cap was looking and it didn't look good.. Car - audi a3 8l 1.6 2001.

Should I worry or this is normal ?

Would worry me the headgasket's gone, but could be condensation? I'd clean it off and take it for a long blast and check it again. (I'm not a mechanic)

What's the coolant level and oil level like? Is the coolant still pink/red/rusty? Is the oil still yellow/black?

And why have you been looking at the cap ?

Are there any actual symptoms of a problem ?

Is it just the cap or does it look clean further in ?

Looks like normal condensation to me, unless the coolant keeps dropping I'd forget about HGF.

The car does drink a lot of oil.

Coolant.. Well. Its does go down but reaaally really slowly, like really. And most propably because of damaged radiator, there are some wet sports in it where coolant desites to get out. The coolant itself looks okay tho. Red.

Did have some short trips these days, yup.

And I was checking just because. Checked the oil level at the same time, some other things.

Get a new rad, and have a look at it after a long drive?

What's the oil like on the dipstick if it has one, or looking inside if you can see much through the filler.

Obviously the concern is that HGF is allowing coolant into the oil ways. However, water forming emulsion in the oil is perfectly normal and it will normally accumulate in the cool spots such as the oil filler cap. Don't worry about it unless you have pints of the stuff, or some other reason to suspect a problem.

If you have HGF allowing coolant into the oil then it will also allow oil and possibly combustion gases into the cooling system. You can recognise that as scum in the header tank. The coolant should normally be completely clean with no contamination at all, so if you see any contamination that is a strong sign of a problem. If you see that, the next step should be a block test aka sniff test.

So, the oil is almost black. Doesn't look contaminated, coolant either. Okay, looks like I really shouldn't worry too much here. The thing that gave me most of concerns were those pieces of condensation hanging

It is not normal at all. The oil must be always in a liquid state in order to allow it to circulate inside the engine. If not for example when temperarure is too low the engine will develop premature wear because the oil is stuck in the cranckcase and not in the entire engine. I would recomend you to look for an oil with lower freezing temperature such as 5w-30. I hope it will help you!

If the engine is freezing the oil, we have at least found how to keep the Pfizer covid vaccine at the right temperature!

Sounds very much like it's just condensation on the cap then.

Certainly if the rest of the oil is its normal colour and viscousity, not gloopy brown mayonnaise then it's certainly not terminally full of water!
