Hi everyone,

My 1989 Peugeot 405 Mi16 is needing a replacement gearbox.

I found an original Mi16 box and it has just been fitted but the mechanic says he can’t get it to go in reverse.
?
My old box was losing gears and popping out etc.

What are the best options to retain performance and also ease of fitting?

Many Thanks

Have the gear linkage connections been replaced? for that era of Peugeots it was very common for the gear linkage connections to keep 'popping' off, is this what was happening to yours and a mechanic has told you the gearbox needed replacing?

The mechanic has changed the links as they had been welded previously and it made it really hard to change gears.

I got another gearbox which he has now fitted but he can’t get it to select reverse and the reverse light is permanently on.

I could have the old box refitted with the new links and hope that improves it but unfortunately this is obviously costing a few quid 😭

I can confirm if you had a H Reg 1.9 gri and pratted about changing gear without using the clutch in the car park of the cinemas in hull you would need to drive back to halls in third gear then look in the engine bay in daylight and pop it back on. A torch would have been useful.

Also I’m sure unrelated but the gearbox on the same car punched a hole in itself in princes key car park and blocked the whole place up till we could shift it.

Just spoken to the mechanic, he thinks that the best option is to look at the original box and see if it can be salvaged.

I can’t find a good box out here in Spain, so I’m not sure what is best to do.

The trouble is it was almost impossible to tell which gear it was in from R 1st & 3rd.

Will new linkages really make much difference to that or will it be a search for a different box ?

The replacement box I got is total toast so I’m hoping eBay will help with a refund.

Its been a very long time, but Im 90% sure that the bolt pattern and mounting points is the same as for the 1.6/1.9 8V GTI engines in Peugeots and Citroens (205/309/BX).

It would be best to check that ^^ on a Pug facebook site, but it might uncover another straight fit gearbox or parts.

I hope you get some luck.

Thank You!

I will have a look on some pages now to check, just posted on a 205 forum.

Its been a while but there was 2 variants of the gearbox of this period of Peugeot with the XU engine.
There was the BE1 with reverse by 1st and a lockout on the gearstick to engage, which was then replaced by the BE3 with reverse below 5th.
Of course you will need the appropriate gear lever/linkages for either so worth checking you have the right one. It will be stamped clearly on the bellhousing.

Mine is the one with reverse by 1st (lift up) is it possible to change the linkages etc. To be able to use the other box if it is the different version?

Thank you smile

Now you have reminded me about the BE1 box. Has your mechanic fitted the reverse cable and plunger to the replacement box. Sounds to me he has fitted a BE3 box?
Have a word with Dean Hunter www.peugeotparts.co.uk He is an old Peugeot boffin, he also will have the correct gearbox. He will also put you straight if it’s just a case of altering the linkage.

Surely it can't be that difficult to take either box apart and see what's wrong ?

Gearbox in 16 valve BX GTi is the same (at least IME), although they are rare cars too so may not help much! I used to sprint/hillclimb a 405 Mi16 some years ago and fitted both gearboxes and engines sourced from BXs being scrapped with no trouble/differences.
