I've also asked in the Volvo section of the forum...

I'm going to have a look at a 2005 S60 diesel/manual. The owner says that sometimes the ABS sensor light comes on, and that his code reader said it's caused by a faulty left hand side sensor. He also says he has a new sensor, but hasn't had time to fit it, which could well mean the fault is more serious!

I've seen mention of drive shafts and wheel bearings causing ABS faults. Is there an easy way to detect what might be causing the warning light? If not, what's the worse-case scenario, and what would it cost for genuine Volvo parts? Would any garage be able to fit them, or would it need to go to a Volvo workshop (again, I've seen mention of 'special' tools).

Take a code reader that reads live data with you.

You will be able to see the code if it is there and will also be able to look at real time wheel speed data when driving with the reader attached.

Every time any Volvo I have had came up with an ABS fault it was the reluctor ring that had failed. New rings are available, and are reasonably priced.

Could be £5 to DIY a reluctor ring replacement (likely).

Could be £1500 for Volvo to replace and code an ABS ECU (very unlikely) after they've charged you £150 to replace the sensor, £600 to replace the driveshaft, £900 to replace the hub etc etc.

Thanks very much. It's the latter scenario which is worrying!

I've just had an initial look at the car, and it looks not too bad overall, but I have a few doubts. I think if I decide to proceed with it I'll ask a mechanic to have a look at it.

Make sure he takes a code reader as I said above or you will still be none the wiser.
