Hi,

Can someone please help? I have a 57 plate zafira that just failed its test on a long list of things. One of them was the emissions. It said the first fast idle only just failed co level was slightly over what it was supposed to be ( 0.2 ) and it was ( 0.24 ) 2nd fast idle was 4.1! That’s a massive jump and I think the guy at the garage is trying to do me as he failed it on windscreen washer reservoir being empty! Just need some advice please/ second opinion?

Windscreen washers are a legal requirement, no excuse at all for it being empty.

And post the full emissions test sheet, some random numbers mean nothing. Largely it shows pure laziness as nothing was checked before the test.

On a Hackney test - granted not an MOT, there is no requirement for the front wipers or screen wash to work, only the rear.

Wrong way round mate, rears aren't a requirement.

Aside of that OP, post the full printout if you have it.

At a guess, I’d say a roadworthiness test for taxi cabs..

Sadly not for our authority

Hackney is taxi test, they don’t need mot’s just a hackney test if not being used privately

They do need MOTs too, but the hackney license would require more frequent additional tests.

Many years ago my son was nearly scammed by a well known fast fitting chain which failed his old Citroen Xantia on emissions, saying he needed a new CAT (£200) plus labour (£200). I smelt a rat, paid up, and drove it a mile down the road to my usual trusty indy where it easily passed. Apparently the trick is to warm the engine up, then wait till the cat cools down, then test it with the cat cold but the oil still warm. I made a formal complaint and got the fee back plus a standard letter of apology.
