Difficulty engaging 1st.

06 mondeo mk3. Manual. When sitting still car difficult to engage 1st or any gear but once moving no problem at all. When approaching traffic lights it will go into first quite easily at around 10mph or below but not once stationary. No oil leaks from box and same wether hot/cold. Any ideas?

Worn clutch or work syncro in 1st.

What about reverse, do you have the same issue?

It's had a clutch and yes it's in all gears. Same effect if car on a slope rolling slightly it will slip into 1st/reverse no problem.

That would be my guess. Might alternatively be a problem in the clutch hydraulics so the slave isn't getting full travel.

When did it have the clutch & has it been OK since then until recently or the same since the clutch was fitted?
Another issue is the nose of the input shaft binding in the spigot bush in the rear of the crankshaft.

Clutch replaced maybe 10k ago. I've only got the car back off a friend who's wife drove it. It was mine previously. Unknown how long it's been like this. It's not worth gearbox rebuild but I might replace box if I come across one cheap. Thanks for suggestions.

Try bleeding the clutch before getting hasty , not often carried out by the motor trade even when a brake fluid service is carried out and the resevoir is shared its quick & cheap and results vary probabaly 50/50 so worth a try then you may be suprised by the knackered brown crap that comes out , failing that the above comments

Reverse bleed on the clutch is often useful .. air rises.

It may be as simple as air in the system causing clutch drag, but I noticed an improvement in my Mk 4 Mondeo by changing the oil for a different brand.

I can't remember the make, but if you google it, you should find it on a Ford website. I'll also try to find out what oil it was.

As already suggested, try bleeding the clutch, mk3 Mondeos can be notoriously hard to bleed after a clutch change, I had to use a pressure bleeder on mine as no other method would work.

Should be no problem to bleed as the system is functioning already just below par , if you have a one way bleed pipe or helper your laughing
