Mk5 GTI DSG Whine

Hi guys,


i got a quiet whining noise 1st -2nd gear low rpm you could hardly hear it. My mate was in the passenger seat and if i didnt tell him he would of never realised it. Apparently this whine noise is normal on these mk5 dsgs is that the case? Or do i have a problem?

I'd recommend a 1945 Brunello di Montalcino if you're after a nice wine.

It’s not uncommon on these. Mine has a whine in first gear, it’s a bearing of some sort (cannot remember which) that can be fixed but I have never bothered.

Wife’s DSG equipped S3 started with a minor whine which got progressively worse, turned out to be diff bearings and needed ‘box replacing, have the ‘box serviced and see how it fares.

If it don’t damage the box or get worse I don’t care you could hardly hear it anyways. I will get the box serviced ASAP aswell.

Getting the DSG box serviced tomorrow at VW. Then I will replace the cam belt and water pump as I don’t know when it’s done.

Got the car checked up at VW they said gearbox is all good so i guess the whine is normal 1st- and 2nd gear you could hardly hear it anyways. I also had my cambelt & waterpump done also a dsg service.
