X Trail 2.2 turbo
Discussion
Hi all
The household shed has decided that it doesn’t like it’s turbo anymore. Quite annoying as we are looking to buy our first home this year and we could have done with it lasting a little longer.
The garage it’s currently sat in after having the diagnosis confirmed are likely to want a large sum of money to fix it and it’s just not worth it. It’s a shed.
Question is: there are some Chinese turbos on eBay for 150 quid that supposedly come with a 2 year warranty. Thoughts on putting one of these on, crossing some fingers, and hoping for the best? I’ve got a very spanner handy mate who would fit it for pizza and beer money. We could do with the car lasting another 12 months max really. Once we get a house then we can be a bit more open to finance / leasing something a bit better for her.
Car is obviously running standard boost and will stay like that. It has a new intercooler a couple of years ago before we got it.

You can get a turbo rebuilt for around £150, certainly under £200. I'd go with that option over buying another turbo personally but there could be a bit of a wait for it.
There are a lot of things which could influence your decision, will the car need an mot or tyres soon? do you like it? does it have silly mileage?
Are you better off just buying a £500 snotter with a years ticket? the car as it is must be worth £300?

What is actually up with the turbo? Could it have caused further damage to the engines internals?
This! If it's just an oil seal and it hasn't overrun then get it rebuilt or fit chinese. If the bearings have failed then the vanes could have milled into the housing sending swarf into the engineGassing Station | Engines & Drivetrain | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
