Name that squeak!? (with video) BMW E61 manual
Discussion
Hi there
After a bit of help please. My BMW 525i (E61 era) has been making a rattling/squeaking noise when coming off the accelerator, or holding low revs.

It can be heard frequently throughout the above video. I would say it's getting steady more common, from occasional to always, but only really noticeable with the windows down.
One symptom I couldn't recreate here is: whilst moving, when coming off the gas it will squeak away, bit if I dip the clutch (and bring revs back to tickover) it silences itself.
I had thought it was aux belt related, and stuck a new idler pulley on the off chance, but this investigation (with the help of an assistant) seems to put it more to the left of the engine, or perhaps near the flywheel / clutch (it's a 6 speed manual).
I have ruled out drive train for now (prop, diff, drive shafts etc) because it occurs when stationery.
Any help appreciated, as always!
Ian

Well, in the absence of suggestions on here (and elsewhere) I took a look under it with the undertrays removed
It didn't really help

But it was loudest near the exhaust pipes.
It's not quite the same magnitude of the noise in the video below, but it makes me suspect an exhaust hanger or maybe a cracked mounting somewhere.

Well, I will bring my monologue to a close.
Further inspection revealed the upper exhaust pipe gasket wasn't being held tightly by the clamp.
This must be making the clicking/rattling sound at 1.5k-2k rev range
Hopefully this post will help someone else in the future trying to diagnose a sound.

My next problem is how to free off the upper stud, which is seized and only moves 1/8th turn either way. My 1/2 sockets are just going to twist it off or snap it.
