Apologies if this is the wrong forum. Following a diversion due to tree works, I have managed to hit something which has caused the centre pipe to snap at the clamp before the backbox. The car isn't worth much so am looking at getting it repaired rather than replaced. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go in North London?

What car is it? I'd have thought welding it would cost about the same as replacing it.

It's a Honda FRV. I've had quotes of £330 (kwik fit) to £450 (dealer) to replace. Car is old and not worth much now so getting to keep costs down.

Any half decent garage or exhaust place should be able to weld it...although most will probably want to try and sell a new part.

Of course, depends on access, condition/cleanliness of the base metal etc whether welding will be sensible either.

As if you cannot weld in-situ, and you have to take the whole thing off...again, preference will be to fit a new part if there is a lot of labour involved.

Just to close this topic, I tried calling a number of garages but none of them wanted to know.

In the end, I found a Powerflow dealer in Park Royal who said they'd look at it so popped in yesterday morning and they got it fixed. They said they took the back box/center pipe off the car to do the work.

I know very little about welding, so took some pictures whilst on the ramp once works were done. They said they put a sleeve in and also fixed it between the clamps (the break was on the side of the clamp towards the center pipe). It looks like a glue or something between the clamps.

The welding looks decent enough, getting nice clean welds on old exhausts can be very difficult, so in that respect it is fine.

Not 100% sure if he has welded over the actual crack from the photos, as welds seem in different places from where it looks the crack may be.
But if he had it off, he probably did get it right.

And it looks like he's used a load of silicone or something inside the joint, if it is, I doubt that will last for whatever reason it was used.

Not surprising most don't want to touch it though. It is easier, and should be a longer lasting solution to fit new parts, although in a throw away world....we should repair more, even if we accept it may not last as long.

Keep an eye on it, if it starts blowing then some Gun Gum will help

Money is really tight at the moment, so if I can get through another 6-12 months with it, will be happy with that. Appreciate all the feedback.

It should have a compressed wire 'olive' as a seal between the two sections, it's designed to be a flexible joint hence the springs (with the olive acting as the cartilage in a ball and socket joint) so the silicone wont last long (and gungum won't last your first outing), so that needs to be addressed. Unless his welding means that the olive will no longer fit...
