Golf clutch pedal not returning?

2016 Golf TDi 150bhp.
Clutch pedal sticking down, I'm guessing master or slave cylinder failing,
is there a way of deciding which one, and is the slave cylinder in the gearbox/bellhousing?

yeah slave is the one at the gearbox end ..surprised were allowed to call them that these days

you can clamp the rubber hose between the two and see if the master holds pressure , also look for drips on either

Master cylinder seal inverting usually.

Check the brake fluid resevoir level too this also happens if the CSC is failing (leaking) the res drops below the threshold thus letting air enter just the clutch hyd system , I have a late transporter doing this in at the moment but seen it many times from Audi to Skoda VAG vehicles
