I've just been to look at and test drive a 2006 Renault Trafic 1.9 dCi Campervan. The vans condition and conversion is brilliant. One thing i noticed on the test drive was a whirling sound as the van accelerated. Anyone familiar with these engines able to confirm if this is something to be concerned about? Thanks.

Well we can't psychically connect to the engine to see what was wrong, but a simple rule is - if it sounds wrong, it is wrong. A 4-pot diesel should be its usual dag-dag self, but anything beyond that, something's broken.

Is the sound linked to engine speed or road speed? Could be a transmission issue.

Yeah the noise came and increased with engine noise. Seen possible causes could be alternator, timing belt, gearbox or turbo...

Cheers for the replies. Ive decided not to buy it, too much risk for an old van with a certain problem.
