EGR valve failing?
Discussion
I have a Mercedes Vito 2008, with 2.2litre diesel engine.
The egr valve was replaced at 80k miles, when there was a big loss of power & engine warning light came on.
80k miles later & it’s been down on power - where it used to hold speed uphill on a dual carriageway, it now slows down. No warning lights & still very drivable, just not got the oomph it had.
Local garage (who I trust) plugged it in, but no issues showing. Fuel filter changed etc.
Yesterday had a big drop in power - felt just as it did when egr valve failed 80k miles ago., though no warning lights came on. I got home, then drove it again & was back to how it’s been recently - just lacking a bit, but not majorly down.
Does this sound like symptoms of a failing egr valve, or do they just totally fail when they go?

Ford 2l TDCI lump here, mine would be a bit lurchy when warming up to start with, then just loss of power when it did go. I found some empty roads and gave it an Italian tune up, car felt smoother after that than it ever had. The light only came on after I started the tune up, well after the complete lack of power - turbo would not get going and could not go above 3,5k rpm.
Have not replaced anything, the tune up sorted it out.

Doesn't necessarily need a new EGR, i cleaned mine out (Toyota so easy to work on) last year, it wasn't sticking just the main intake was partially blocked with combustion carbon filth so probably drawing more combustion gases through so an accelerating problem, the engine ran miles better and cleaner for doing so.
When checking the EGR see as far as you can into the intake manifold, chances are you won't be able to see the swirl flaps if fitted but they're likely carboned to hell too, if its bad best fetch it off and clean that and the egr cooler too.
Check crankcase breather(s) too, if enough muck has accumulated for the egr to block quite likely the breather/filter is in similar state.
