Replaced this auxiliary belt on my Honda about 18 months ago and noticed this the other day.

I've replaced the belt anyway, but no idea what is causing it. No obvious play or tightness to any of the pulleys.

How old was that belt and how was it stored before you fitted it?

Could just be old stock poorly stored.

Was it definitely the right length? Being slightly too long could leave it under tensioned and liable to slip under load. Does that engine drive anything off the back of the belt, or is it only idlers on the back?

Belt dressing spray can help with a belt that slips under load. Bar soap works reasonably well if you don't have belt dressing spray.

And yes, it could be a poor quality or degraded 'new' belt as others already suggested.

That one was bought from ECP and fitted next day, but no idea how long they had it in stock. Can't remember the brand either, and all the markings have gone.
New one is a Gates one

Nothing driven off the back of the belt. The ribbed side is power steering, alternator, Aircon pump and crank pulley, back side is two idler pulleys.

Edit: it was a contitech belt 1784mm. New one is gates 1785mm
