Of Course the first problem is I bought a second hand Alfa Romeo Giulietta - well it was pretty! Its a 2013 1.4 Petrol Sportage.

It drives fine, then it wont. It is showing 2 diagnostic codes - mis fire on cylinder 2 and random misfire.

When I start the car - the check engine light illuminates (not flashing - though that did happen once briefly. Stopped car immediately - restarted issue went away) no DNA suck in Normal / no stop start - Stop Start never works.

Sometimes the mis fire is obvious, loss of power, spluttery engine. But after a few minutes it runs normally. It does not do this on every start. But check engine light / no DNA / No Stop start is common.

If the fault is cleared, either by disconnecting the battery/steering to the left fall lock, then right lock, accidently stalling it, or at a garage with the right software it will clear for a few days. Run normally.

What I have done - as it was a second hand buy with 60k on the clock I changed oil and oil filter/new top quality battery - 200 quid one/new spark plugs/new air filter all oem/as recommended.

What i suspect - coil pack?, Injection jet?. - What i dont think it is as I think diagnostics would show a code - o2 sensor - erg valve - maf sensor.

Why i think it may not be coil pack/injection jet? - I would expect these to be more consistent faults. I drive it 90 miles each day.
I do not think these faults can go 2-3 days with out reoccurring. I cant see a cause, it never initiates when car is in motion. Only when left over night, or the work car park.

One way or another ill get to the bottom of it, get it booked into a garage. Maybe ill buy a coil pack on for cylinder 2 and see if thats it. Perhaps even replace the jet on cylinder 2.

But if any one reads this and says to themselves - ahaaa yup seen that been there done that - that would be whizzo!

I do not have diagnostic software, I had a Halfords run it, hoping i would get a nice clear code, MAF sensor or something. I'm not sure if i swapped the coils around I could tell if the misfire had moved without running down to Halfords to test it, I was there 3 hours last weekend! And that is supposing it was co operative enough to misfire when required. I may just buy a new one, then at least I know i have one good one. I may try and test it with a multi meter, i need to take a look and see if i can do that because of the connecter. If I can ill stick it in the freezer for an hour as im assuming the fault maybe when the coil is cold. Plus Halfords charged me 69 quid, i could buy a new coil pack for that!.

Although you could buy a new coil pack you might not be able to buy a good coil pack.

For less than the price of a cheap aftermarket coil pack you could buy a code reader that would allow you to see what the car thinks is wrong.

OK, I'll give you that one on the basis of sympathy. wink

But getting off-topic (sorry) have you ever wondered why it is when you manage to get a word in it is called interrupting, but when the reverse happens it isn't?

I suspect he was asking about MultiAir as there can be problems if the wrong oil has been used.

Is that the correct oil when you changed it, or the correct oil throughout the life of the car?
