2018 Ford Connect noisy aircon compressor and mpg

The air con in my van works fine and blows cold, but compared to a mate's identical van, the compressor is more noisy. The mpg has become noticeably worse recently, and I'm wondering if it's no coincidence that I've noticed both things happening at roughly the same time. There are no obvious signs that the van has any engine, egr, or dpf related issues, it drives as it should and performance seems unaffected.
The compressor had to be moved out of the way a few months ago when the alternator was replaced, I'm wondering if there's a connection to that.

Noise stops as soon as you switch the ac off?
It's certainly not there with the AC switched off, but it's more of a slight and distant rattle, rather than a drone. I wondered if it was the clutch getting worn, but it would be something that needed to cause drag to affect the mpg.Noise stops as soon as you switch the ac off?

Before I answer be aware I have proven my lack of mechanical ability numerous times on these forums.
However, I have recently replaced various bits of aircon on a couple of cars resulting in exactly what you describe...

If the compressor was disconnected it will have had to have been regassed afterwards. It could be something as simple as low pressure, that was the case is one of the cars I replaced the condenser on. Got the pressure right with a couple of cans of gas off ebay and it's running fine again.
The one I did the compressor and condenser on needed oil and gas but still needs work as while its much better its still not 100%... which is why I would wait until someone more knowledgeable replies and explains why I should stick to cooking.

The compressor was just moved out of the way, not disconnected, and it still blows ice cold. It's a slight background noise when running that you have to have the bonnet open to hear, but it's noisier than my mate's identical van, and it goes off with the AC switched off. My only concern with it is whether or not any drag in the system is pulling the mpg down.When the weather gets cooler I'll try it on an extended run with the AC off, and see if things improve.
I'm only allowed in kitchens to either build them of decorate them, so you're a step ahead of me in the cookery dept!
