Just go to a garage. Get it diagnosed. Doesnt need a main dealer.
Weigh up the pros and cons of paying to get it fixed rather than how much WBAC or similar will offer you on it.

Smoke in the engine bay is not usually a good thing.

Well find a tow truck or mobile mechanic ?

Maybe an Italian style tune up (rag the bejeezus out of it) and maybe a dose of injector cleaner etc? Have you removed the plugs? Dropped any oil from the sump?

Check for metal flakes in oil filter or sump oil.

Is the fuel pump/filter old? Could be starved....?

Also the smoke in the engine bay - has the inlet manifold cracked?

It's my wife's and seemingly just started doing it. I haven't looked at it yet. It's stuck at her work place in going to see it later but hearing the short video sounds hellish.

No there's nothing been done that you mentioned and anything that can be done will need to be done at the roadside. I've never heard a petrol engine so rough.

That's true..I stupidly did that years ago in a petrol astra, put diesel in it. The place i worked in drain the tank and lines etc but never ran right after that.
