Found a late New Rover V8 Engine in a Box.
Discussion
I have a question about a V8 engine. Anyone know these?
It came out of one of our stores.
I must have acquired it with loads of other MOD stuff over 15 years ago. Never knew I had it until I opened the box.
Thought I had better make use of it.
I dropped it off to my engine builder last Saturday. It was still in its crate.
He removed the cam, followers, cam covers, sump and timing cover for inspection.
Looks like this engine is new or very nearly new.
I have no history.
It is a late engine, the number starts S87. It says its a 4.0l.
I have also have some RWD conversion bits for it as it looks 4WD to me.
I want to put it in a sports car or something old and cool.
Why Not?. I will buy a car to fit the engine. Either classic or Stealth?
I have an LT77 and flywheel already.
I also have a shallow RWD sump, an SD1 timing cover and a distributor. I also have I have a new cam (.39in lift), and distributor drive gear.
It has an engine number indicating 2002ish, 9.35:1 CR for a Morgan, TVR or a replacement engine?
I want to make it distributor driven with carbs and a manual 5 speed. Old School. That is where my problems have started.
So I want to try and use what I have.
The problem is, the engine is quite late and the engine block oil pickup hole is blanked from factory. It was never drilled as it wasn't required by the later vehicles.
I have put a red arrow pointing to where it should be.

I want to use the old SD1 timing cover (cam driven distributor and pump).
This is the question.
The gallery to the timing cover face appears to be usable if I can get the oil into it from the sump.
Anyone know if we can drill out the hole to get to the gallery and the attach an SD1 pickup?
We can start drilling in the right direction, but I dont want to hit a pressurised oil gallery or something.
Anyone done this please?

The Rover V8 engine appreciation group on Facebook as suggested is helpful especially for 4x4 stuff.
Looks a late 4.0, it has cross bolting to the main bearings, not famiiar with a dizzy driven oil pump on them though and thought they were all crank driven.
Interesting though, why is the pickup blocked off, how does it get the oil from the sump?

On the later engines - with the crank driven pump, the oil pickup goes into the timing case, not the block.
On earlier engines the oil pick up goes to where I have put the arrow.
It is looking like I can just drill a hole in that part of the block casting up to the residual oil way which will lead to the old style timing cover I wish to use.
I will also drill and tap 2 holes either side of the new hole to bolt the oil pick up to the block.
Just need to think about what I want to fit it too.

I think there is a quite rare intermediate front cover that uses the crank driven oil pump and also a distributor ?
