Hi all
i was originally going chevy with my Minotaur kit car but lack of work has seen my engine fund disapear.
with very good advice from a couple of very good friends i am thinking audi now, A8 4.2
has been recommended for my mid engine car ,(and apparently if i can find a 2 wheel drive manuel then i should be able to drop it straight in), but is this the best option as i would be ok with a 3 litre . bearing in mind fuel prices and availablity.
as far as all the electrics involved with a new engine im way out of my depth but apparently that shouldnt cause too much of a problem.
does any one have any thoughts , any ideas or spec also
were and how is the best place to purchace a good one?
many thanks stu this is the space i have www.asci24.dsl.pipex.com/car/tanks3.JPG
& this is my car www.asci24.dsl.pipex.com/minotaur.htm

I don't think there was such a thing as a 2wd 4.2 A8. Equally, i think all A8s were autos.

www.allaudi.co.uk would be a good starting point for parts.

Perhaps some of Audi's 2wd transaxle's will bolt up anyway ? Good chance they use a similar bellhousing pattern.

i have heard of someone fitting one in a Ultima
also another guy that used the gearbox of a tdi engine without any bother
does this sound about right ?
from quickly scanning the internet i do believe fwd models are available but im guessing rare.
would i be better with an a6 im assuming its roughly the same sort of dimension
but ive never seen either

I guy I know was going to fit a 4.2 Audi V8 in an Ultima, he was going to use the smaller capacity (3.7?) 2 wd gearbox i believe. Last I heard was that he lost heart in it and offloaded the un finished project

The 3.7 V8 was available with front wheel drive.

They're the same basic engine so I imagine you could make a 2WD 4.2

Hi I could not find any info on a a8 with maual gearbox , i think they are all multitronic
not sure that would be good in a kit car.
i did however find a car that might do the job
Audi A6 s-line 3.2 litre fsi, it uses a 6 speed manual gearbox and is front wheel drive
does anyone know anymore about this car ?
cheers stu

All original shape A8's have Tiptronic auto boxes, can be used in a manual mode via Tiptronic.

Beware the ECU's are complicated as much of the cars electrics is routed through the ECU.

The S8 was available in Germany with a manual gearbox. Same 4.2 V8 but with a bit more power. So should be findable. Brands hatch used to use a manual one as a fire car IIRC.

i use to have a 4.2 V8 and it was a truly lovely engine.

I frequently returned 27mpg on long runs at 100mph on the continent and it went like a train!

i don't think that running the engine would be too difficult even with the auto- you could use Megasquirt to run the engine and an aftermarket PCM to run the box- when setup right auto boxes can be great for racing. AFAIK there was an A6 with a 4.2 and a manual box so they are around just keep looking. Basically anything with that 4.2 engine should have a box that bolts straight up- ie S6, A6, RS6 etc etc

Sorry my mistake, I checked, I was always told the one we had at work was a 4.7 although it was a pre-production prototype.

I've got an Audi S4 twin turbo v6 with a 2WD gearbox I had rebuilt with special ratios in the garage. Ive also got the engine loom, ECU, instrument pack (for immobiliser) intercoolers, induction, lghtened flywheel, etc, etc. My project has changed since I bought it all so if you're interested in a v6 with loads of tuning potential and all the parts you'll need let me know.
