nearly a fireball

stopped at a shop on monday after travelling 20miles ish, came out the shop and drove another 20miles ish. When i stopped i noticed an 'unusual' burning smell (very metalic)opened the engine bay and to my horror discovered the heat shield near the manifold was literally smouldering bright orange, and pouring out smoke??????

i put the 'fire' out, during the latter stage of that journey and now each time i use the car it over revs and when i depress the clutch the revs don't drop off - and sometimes they actually increase?!?

i had this problem about a month ago, took it to the garage and they replaced the throttle position sensor.

any thoughts why it's giving me jip now??
