Sounds like, battery, starter or solenoid, or possibly a bad earth, whereabouts are you?

next time it does it, connect a jump lead between the engine and the negative terminal on the battery.

Get your husband to find the starter relay and check that, if he can laugh

Ours did this, but it's a later car (1999 / S reg GTI).

Ours was the transponder for the immobiliser - I'm not sure if your car has a factory immobiliser or not but on ours the little 'aerial' that reads the code from the key ceased to operate so the car wouldn't run. If you took the key out and put it either back in or turned it round, the car would start. The local Pug garage said it was a known fault, rather than pay them a fortune to fit it, I bought the part and fitted it myself. It took less than 20 minutes and cost about £25 IIRC. It's basically a little collar that sits round the ignition barrel. You just need to remove the steering column shroud to fit it - it's a piece of cake.

Hope this helps,

Phil.

husband has checked and says...if the car was made with one, he'd be able to fix it. he has been told not to listen to TVR nutters, speed and power is their thing. technical knowledge and refinement is left to BMW drivers
