Hi all,

When I was younger - we had one of those naff DAF 'Volvo' cars - the 340-Series. These had CVT - and the belts kept on breaking, and the engine was just over-revving all the time. So my impression about CVT was partly set - a system where drive is achieved via a rubber belt having to bite the drive-cones via its edge - has to be a rubbish system. Belt-edges wear out quickly >>> system is rubbish.

So - now we find them on small Honda cars - e.g. the Jazz. Clearly - CVT must now have been developed to an extent where it's a different animal. And I read elsewhere here that CVT is a rugged system?!?! E.g. for tractors?!

So how do they work these days - and namely - what materials are they using? And do I have to treat the Jazz as gently as I think I do ('driven by the edge of a belt or two') - or is it now somehow a rugged and reliable system?

For Honda to be using it - I'd assume it is indeed reliable - just want to know what they've done and how it works.

Plus - they're oil-filled gearboxes now? How does that work, given that it's only ever a frictional connnection?

Hmmm - there was me getting all excited about what amazing technology was being deployed in the Honda - but according to Honda H.O. - they simply use the standard CVT (belt-drive) system in there, & Torotrak said that their system was not used in the Honda Jazz.

Do you know anything that neither of them are willing or able to divulge?!

Would've been amazing - cos that Torotrak technology looks very serious!

I'd heard about Audi's development. AFAIK, it was a take on belt-drive CVT - but somehow deploying chain instead of belt - hence longer-lasting.

Still wondering what Honda did with it to be confident of its reliability.
