Engine still seems to be revving up for a moment after I let off the throttle on my 88 golf (1.6). I had the same problem on another car of mine and it was a ripped diaphragm in the weber carb - one that was contained behind a small square cover on the side. Any ideas what this is called and if it would be included in a standard carb repair kit?

Sounds like the accelerator pump. When you floor it it squirts extra fuel in to make the mixture richer.

Aye I had a quick read and thats the part - is the accelerator pump diaphragm normally included in carb repair kits?

I would expect it to be as it is a common failure mode.
