With a carbed engine (Single HIF44).....

Is it worth doing to increase drivability? Ideally to make a fairly wild cam as close to street tractable as possible (Thinking Hillclimb spec motor to run on the road)? Has anybody any experience of using this type of set up (crank position sensor and throttle potentiometer) and can give any advice. Any system that are recommended or even tuners with good reputation in this area?

All people that are going to slag off using carbs needn't read on....

Somebody like Aldon are likely to have an 'off the shelf' dizzy for just about every tuned A series around, if not they can do a custom one for you and still return cheaper than a fully mapable ignition module.

it would depend if you want to make future changes to the spec of your engine though as a mappable system can be reconfigured for those changes.

Mapped ignition is worth it on any car.

For Minis, ask these guys.

Oh, and search for MJ or MegaJolt.

I went the Aldon route for my turbo mini. But if I was doing it again, i'd go mappable, if for no other reason than to get rid of the dizzy entirely which frees up some space at the front of the car, and is usually more reliable too without all the electronic gubbins pretty much exposed to the elements.
My 1380 Mini has a webber alpha twin point injection system, and no dizzy! Its great having that bit of extra space to play with. And of course the setup works a treat.
