Do bear in mind that I'm a plugs points and condenser sort of bloke!

Rover 114 in the Missus' Metro Cabrio is acting up! Sarts & runs fine but after say 4 miles the engine cuts.

Revs rise by about 100 then dead cut and won't restart for about 10 mins. During these 'dead' periods there is power to the coil but no spark at plugs and the fuel pump does not run.

So far I have changed rotor arm, swapped relay module, dist cap & leads and the ECU with known good units.

Problem seems to be temperature related because it occurs as soon as engine reaches normal level. I replaced the Coolant temp sensor and have even tried blanking the hole off and keeping the sensor in a cup of cold water but although that causes the engine to run rough - presumably because the ECU is richening the mixture - the cut still happens although it is slightly easier to restart.

I could change coil and crank sensor but otherwise I am running out of ideas.

One suggestion has been the Ignition amp module but although one is listed for our car I can't find it - certainly not in the usual place on the distributor body.

I know PHers will say 'get a proper car' but that is missing the point!

This is a genuine appeal for help the Missus is using my Pajero and I'm on the bus.

Thanks lads,

EDLT, Yes it does and when 'cut' it is exactly like an immobilisation!

Ken, you've given me the confidence to go out and buy a crank sensor then. I hope my next post will be t tell you that it's fixed!!

Turns out Motorwise was as good as his name and indeed my troubles are over - Well the Metro is running again at least! - Thanks Ken. Yes it was the crank sensor.

Part has been sitting in the glovebox of the Pajero waiting for some good weather so I took my chances today and it was a pretty manky looking thing that came out of the hole with a bit of a struggle.

Thanks for all the ideas and moral support. If I couldn't sort it today I had made my mind up to leave the hood down and use it as a garden planter!
