The winged sump on my LS6 is in the way of the exhaust routing (custom build - LS6 into a Cerbera), so I'm looking for an alternative that doesn't have the wings - ie doesn't project past the block on either side - but is still not too deep as I don't have much ground clearance. Dry sump isn't an option. Any suggestions?

Edited to add... A winged sump with the wings positioned well forward would also work.

Your best option is an ls2 pan. Failing that you could get an early vette winged item and cut off the wings and weld it up. The later split level winged pan is to much work to modify. I think Paul (v8 sag) modded one of those.

Paul did indeed mod one - that's the one I've got. It came with the engine and trans I bought off him last year.

It's trimmed to fit inside the chassis rails but not enough clearance to get an exhaust past. If I trimmed off more of the wings - which would almost remove them altogether - would it still be useable?

The latest Monaros are LS2s so will see what the local Holden dealer has to offer.

Monaro's don't have ls2 sumps unless they are removed by GM in Oz and changed for the monaro sump. A monaro sump has the pan at the front and won't be of any use to you. Maybe there are surplus ls2 sumps in your neck of the woods, it's worth asking.

Wouldnt a regular F-body sump do ?

Its a fairly typical rear sump

Monaro uses a front sump as Mike says.

Welding....can be nasty. The damn things warp very easy.

What did Jellison use on his Chimera ?

F body would fit the bill albeit a tad deeper which is no bad thing. Think jelly used an ls2 item?

i've got an F-body sump on my LS1 if you would like me to take measurements. It's quiet a compact affair which suits my use very well.

I understand the LS2 sump is shallower so I probably won't go for the f-body one at this stage, thanks anyway.

The local Holden dealer quoted me $2900 (~£1200) for a late model LS2 sump, rip off price defended with some bollox about Holden recovering R&D costs in the first year or two after manufacture. No thanks...

Scroggin Dickey have them for US$285:

Would I need to get a matching oil pickup or would the LS6 pickup do the job?

If its shallower, you will definately need a new pickup.

The winged 'vette sump I have now is shallower than the LS2 unit proposed - is that what you meant? I haven't looked inside but is it not as simple as welding in an extension pipe or something?

Not by much. The vette item has far superior baffling. The ls2 job is just cheap crap imo. If you go for the ls2 item then buy the pick up to suit. Job done, nice and easy

Obviously if its shallower, you would need to shorten the pickup, assuming it picks up in the axact same location.

just buy the correct part though.
