Building a new exhaust for my 71 Camaro and have 2 questions.

1: Balance pipes are usually near to the headers, before the mufflers, would it matter if it was after them?

2: At present have a conventional 'H' balance pipe, what advantage do newer 'X' pipes have?

Better to have them in front as they offer the hot gasses to points of exit. The pressure will be less after the mufflers, Still, probably not a huge difference.

H and X pipes aid in scavenging as well. The X pipes allow for smoother, faster flow as they gases don't have to make a 90 degree corner. As already said they need to be close to the headers in order to work. I think it has to do with the timing of the exhaust pulses, if too far back the timing is all screwed up.
