Hi, I've got a bit of a problem trying to set the timing on my Pinto engined kit,
It's a 2ltr with a 1.6 head which was fitted due to oil p*ssing out the front camshaft seal on the 2ltr head, I already had the ' new ' head from a ( supposedly ) re-conditioned engine so after consulting various folk who told me it was a straight swap, confirmed by info in workshop manual I just swapped them, the thing is that when i got the 1.6 engine it was fitted with two twin choke dellorto's which I'm now thinking means the head could have been reworked with fast road use in mind, I'm just using a single twin choke weber and I can't stop the bloody thing from ' pinking ' whenever it gets hot, any ideas will be gratefully accepted, by the way i do intend to re-fit the original head as soon as i get it converted to unleaded fuel so this is only temporary

I hope you can make sense of all this cos i can't confused

Did you check the volumes? It may be that the new head has smaller cham, bers (or has been skimmed to raise the compression) and you're simply running too much compression now.

I didn't check anything just cleaned it up and swapped, stupid i know but there it is,
i didn't fit a new seal as i'm going to have that head sorted out for unleaded and i just wanted a quick swap,
i use unleaded now as i have no choice but i use additive ( i'm still on the first tank of fuel, that's how far i've gone in it !
and i've tried the ignition everywhere,
However I think i've sorted it, I'd bought a brand new carb and i can't get the mixture rich enough so i'm going to ring the dealer and see if he can sort out some richer jets for me, I'm thinking this because when i took it for a test after adjustment i pulled the choke out full and it sounded ok, not brilliant just ok

Many thanks for taking the time to reply

Doubt you'll see any improvement from drowning it in petrol, I think GreenV8S is right and the combustion chamber volumes are too small.

If you want to go down the quick bodge fix route try fitting two head gaskets instead of one

What Weber carb have you got on it? 32/36DGV? Or 32/32? Years ago, when I fitted one of these jetted for a 2.0l to a 1.6l I couldn't stop it pinking.

I can't be certain if the 2.0l head is different from the 1.6l, but I seem to remember that it is.

externally ther is a single bolt hole diffrence

aa man was the only one to know that i had a 2 ltr in a 1600 body

so i am sure the internals are diffrent

diffrent combustion chamber size

Engine size is easy to determine from outside. 2000cc has '20', '2,0' or '2.0' cast into the block near the bottom, driver's side. Similarly, 1600 has '16', '1,6' or '1.6' on the casting. I don't know of any external markings on the cylinder head.

Hi I've sorted the problem ( i think) not taken it out yet but after taking advice from dealer I found an air leak in the manifold, The carb is a 30/34 HMTL, It replace the DTFH one which apparantly Ford had commissioned weber to make for them, they used an electronic choke control which I'm told is a load of cr*p, there are a few hoses which needed disconnecting and plugging and I'd missed one which had two very small openings, The new carb has a manual choke so it's a bit easier to fit and live with IMHO

As far as I'm aware the cylinder heads are the same, it's the bore size etc that make the difference in engine size, but don't quote me on that, I took off the rocker box to check the valves and found that the camshaft was a ford one so there may not have been any work done on the head after all, I was clutching at straws by then and going off the experiences I've had through this build It was a guess ( I'm the third owner, two previous gave up ) check out my site you'll see what i mean http://ruscoe.net/haldane/

thanks again all
