So whats the difference between the MSv2 and the MSextra.
They both seem to fit the bill for what I need.
What am I missing?

Nothing.
You look down this chart and if MS2 B&G or MS2/Extra 1.0 (which both require an MS2 chip) suits all your needs the go straight to MS2 based setup.

If the feature only exists on MS1 then go that route - you can always upgrade later. (you just swap the chip over, but youre likely to need to retune)

MS2 based solution is prefered because of the more powerful (relatively) processor - gives finer resolution on the pulsewidth etc.

Is the MS2/Extra being used by non-gurus yet? Or is it still a little raw?

I'm still running MS1/Extra - I'm going to get an MS2 chip on the next shipment and start taking a look at it on the bench. MS1/extra does pretty much everything i want right now and works without and issues.
If starting from scratch - I would be happy going straight to MS2/Extra if your combination is a known config, and not something that's just came out of alpha.

Thanks for that Eliot. It's going on a (soon to be FI) MX5/Miata which is pretty well catered for with MS1/Extra so I reckon I'll stick to that for now - especially as I've already ordered the MS1 bits. Might look at MS2/Extra again when I've actually got it working copying everyone else's crib notes.

Theres a plug and play MS solution for MX-5's available now:

Seems like a pretty neat solution and should mean no changing of sensors and little new wiring.

Saw that on there. Alas, the box containing bags of components is already sat on my desk. Ho hum... Cheers for the heads up.
