MX6 auto gear box - 'S' mode?

Just got myself an Auto MX6. Not normally an auto-person, but a broken right leg means I can't put much weight on it, so left foot braking is required.
I know 'D' is general 'drive' and 'L' is low, but what is the 'S' mode?
It seems it can either be 'sports' or 'second', depending on the manufacturer etc.
There is 1,2 and 3 next to L, S and D respectively, however from the bit I've driven it I've not been sure exactly what it's trying to do

The Auto I drove had E for Economy, S for Sports mode and M for Winter mode. In M you set the gear for the lowest gear you want to drive in, so if you put it in second it would always start and stop in second allowing you more traction when you set off, handy in icy conditions. I'm guessing you have similar settings on your gearbox although they may be named differently. HTH
