Hi folks looking for a bit of advice. Just got a 418 diesel thats got the old Pug XUD engine in. Put a new cambelt in today, locked everything up, injector pump, cam and flywheel (through the hole at the front of the gearbox adaptor plate). Put it all back together and it doesnt want to fire. After about 1seconds cranking and accelerator flat to the floor it splutters to life and only runs with the foot flat to the floor, slowly creeping to a ceiling of 3000rpm, any lifting and it dies. I've stripped it all down checked everything again and still nothing.
I'm following the old adage of if at first you don't succeed try again and if you still have no joy bugger off to the pub; while im there if anyone has any idea's on how to fix the engine can you let me know.

Regards
Iain

You may want to try pug306.net.

A few of the members there have extensive knowledge on the XUD engines, theres a dedicated diesel section, you'll probably find an answer there.

Lesson 1, never trust the timing holes, did you check to see if they aligned up before removing the old belt?
Not a diesel tech myself, but some Peugeots have been known to slip the bottom pulley causing the timing peg to misalign. If its of the rubber damper type of pulley this could cause a problem.

You've got the pump timing out, probably retarded by one tooth.

BTW are there any external ways I can find where the various bits should be to verify the bolts locking off the pulleys? eg finding TDC without taking the head off (easy enough with a petrol, not entirely sure how with a diesel)

Don't know this particular engine, but if there are no timing marks you may find there are timing holes... a hole in the bellhousing that you can stick a six inch nail into and at TDC it pops into a hole in the rim of the flywheel sort of thing. Or you can buy a really expensive pin instead of the six inch nail. Something similar may be the case for the injection pump. Camshaft may involve fannying about with a jig and a dial gauge if you're unlucky.
