3ltr V6 Essex - has any one supercharged on before?

Iain Daniels Engineering, the Scimitar and TVR preparation specialists, have been running a monster Essex (330bhp+) with a Vortech supercharger in a sprint/hills car for more than ten years. although not an Eaton, im sure they will be of use in terms of advice/heading off pitfalls etc. if you want IDEs number let me know and i will dig it out.
A friend of mine has been sprinting a sierra fitted with a supercharged cosworth V6, producing about 300 to 350 bhp........its fitted with a forged pistons, an Eaton supercharger from a straight-six Jag, a big intercooler and lots of water injection.......unfortunatley it recently blew up - very badly, upon seeing a picture of the crankshaft, I realised it was a cast iron item,..... the fatigue resistance of cast Iron or forged steel production like cranks is nowhere near that of a gas-nitrided race crank.
also one other significant factor is the engine is NOT fitted with piston cooling jets......when you turbo or supercharge an engine, piston temperature becomes a real problem, and piston cooling jets are a must have on any pressure charged engine.
so if your going to do it, get a gas nitrided billet crank, and work out a way to fit piston cooling jets.

Knighty, thanks for the heads up. However mad it may seem I’m not planning on sprinting only using it for road use. For the cost of the mods you mention I could quite probably buy the entire uk quantity of second hand 3ltr v6 essex engines (as I see them advertised quite regularly for a couple hundred quid) and use them as disposable items..as the essex is not a very high compression engine it will lend itself to being blown quite easily.. Just need to figure out remote mounting of carb for a 3rd gen M62...

Unfortunately there may be a flaw in my plan as i thought that the M62 was fitted to 90's 6 cylinder Jags, however i now found out that it was the M90 which is to big.
Does anybody know if the M62 was fitted to any UK/European models or as wiki suggests, it was only fitted to US models...?

Hi J, I have asked my mate and heres his reply, I will send you his e-mail via a private message:
"The M62 is a bit small for a 3.0L engine, as it pumps 62 cu in per revolution compared to the M90 pumping 90 cu in per revolution. 3.0L is roughly 180 cu in, so sucks 90 cu in per revolution. The superchargers are designed to run at up to 14,000 rpm (although you can push them a bit higher) so an M90 with a 2:1 pulley ratio will supply an "ideal" 1 bar boost. However, with losses in the system you would not get that much boost, probably closer to 9 to 10 psi. I have been running a pulley ratio of 2.6:1, with compression ratio dropped from std 9.7:1 down to 8.5:1 on forged pistons. However I am thinking of dropping the pulley ratio back to about 2.3:1 to reduce heat and help the reliability.
The charger I use is from a Jag XJR 4.0L straight six, but I do not know the part no. unfortunately. I bought it brand new from jag, as they were selling them cheap (£550) but most people buy them on e-bay second hand. There is a lot of information on the Fordpower Uk website: www.fordpower.org.uk.
