Driveline slop in Corvette C6
Discussion
I've recently acquired a Corvette C6 (Z51/MZ6) and the driveline sloppiness is really starting to irritate me. I'm a seasoned member of CorvetteForum.com and, from searching the forums, it seems to be a characteristic of these cars. However, having not driven any other examples, I'm not sure if mine is any worse than the average.
The main symptoms are a loud clunking from the diff when coming on and off the throttle at low speeds in 1st/2nd gear. It's also very difficult to drive smoothly when crawling along in 1st gear.
What causes it and what can be done about it? I'm not sure if the clunking is down to the diff being an LSD? To clarify, the clunking sounds I'm on about all occur when driving in a straight line, not when turning. A slight clunk can also be heard from the diff if I change into 1st, then change into neutral and sharply let the clutch out with the car stationary... sounds like lash being taken-up in the diff gearset(?) These clunking noises are easily audible from outside the car and are somewhat embarrassing, apart from anything else. I find myself trying to 'drive around' them by slipping the clutch more than usual and trying to be ultra-smooth with the throttle when in traffic.
Cheers,
Ian.
