wondered if anyone could share an opinion on a fault I have on a 2.0 tdi Audi engine (2004 covered 80k) its is dificult to select gears from a standstill when going from first to reverese after you have stopped and if you press the clutch select first, let out the clutch to take up the bite the car moves forward but when you depress the clutch the car keeps rolling forward...

when you are in a gear driving , if you rest your foot on the clutch pedal its at the top till you back off on the throttle then the pedal falls an inch or so.

the car has previously had a clutch and flywheel under warrenty (20k ago) , Ive had the clutch bled and no air, all gearbox bolts are tight and the engine mounts seem fine and only thing that now springs to mind is if the crank is moving about does this sound possible ? and if so what will the fix be ?? will it have thrust washers in the main cap to take up float ?and could these have fallen out confused

thanks in advance Jeff

From what you say it could very well be end float on the crank, but the good news is that it is easy to diagnose in the workshop - you just need a dti and a pry-bar.

The fix would be new thrust washers. I would suspect bearing layer delamination. If the engine comes apart from this then check the timing chains and gears as they may well have stretched.
