Hi there, i have just signed up to the site and drive a starlet EP82:
Here is a brief run down.its a 1992 ep82 starlet facelift
Stroked to 1.5 by using a 5efe bottom end
Knife edged and balanced crank
H section rods and low comp pistons
High lift long duration cams
440cc low impedance injectors
4 branch inlet manifold
Hybrid turbo (TD04 / TD05)
Pressurised cold air feed
Decat
Lightened flywheel
Ogura triple plate clutch(500 bhp rated)
Quick shift
Front mount ic
Battery in boot etc
Custom interior
Switchable suspension
Short shift
GTI drive shaft

There is abit of blue smoke when i rev the car however it's not always there, is this normal on a turbo'ed car, help much appresiated!

Welcome to Pistonheads.

Sounds like quite a piece of kit that you have. The blue smoke could be caused by a lot of things, i have seen that many modified turbo cars suffer from this and it is usually un-burnt fuel that is coming out as the engine management system is chucking fuel in at a very high rate. Blue smoke can also be oil, which is a bad sign and could be caused by a bent valve etc.

I am no expert though so please anyone correct me if i am wrong.

thats just what i was checking for, i intially thought it was oil however i was just unsure wehther this was normal as it is a turbo. I have a new set of magencore 8.5mm leads and denso iridium's just to improve on the fuel being burnt! I am going to get it checked out just incase but i doubt it could be anything eles as the engine has only done in and around 3,000miles! cheers for the help!

Blue smoke is definately oil.

If its when you rev it....it could be valve stem oil seals ( or worn guides )...

Or piston rings....or turbocharger.

What sort of oil feed do you have to the turbo ? Lots of modern turbos can be quite fussy, in that they really dont like a lot of oil going to them, as their seals cant handle it, and many have, or require restrictors in the feed line.

Is the oil drain from the turbo free flowing ? No chance of restriction ?

Hey was just reading about your problem and Blue smoke is not a defent oil problem like what was said before it can be over fueling which can be the case here. Try and get someone to rev the engine when you do it and see if u can smell the smoke (not stick your face in it) but it would smell rich is its over fueling.

Black/dark grey smoke is overfuelling. Not blue, as well as obvious smell differences.

Blue smoke means you're burning oil.

White smoke could mean water vapour.

Excessive fuel (rich mixture) is dark grey smoke.

Flames means very excessive fuel!

IMHO.

I will give it a rev later but the car does run rich when on boast and pop's like mad, i am not too sure about the flames as im the one driving!

I gave the car a wee rev and it does smell more like smoke not oil lol?? the car seems to be running alot better and doesnt give out as much smoke out on intital boost!
