Hi, does anyone know if a petrol CAT is the same as a Diesel CAT? I assume they are meant to do the same thing so should be of the same construction. Are they interchangable at all?

Thanks

No, they are different and not normaly interchangeable.

A diesel cat is mainly used for oxidising CO and unburnt fuel to reduce hydrocarbon emmisions and particulates, which is a relatively simple task as the exhaust of a diesel has plenty of oxygen available.

The petrol converter has to be able to store oxygen during the weak phase of the lambda cycle in order to oxidise the excess hydrocarbons during the rich phase.

Thanks for the info. So it would be no use putting a Diesel converter onto a petrol engine but what about a petrol one on a diesel engine?
