Indeed, being a diesel there is no 'ignition' circuit.
Can only be a fueling issue, possibly related to an air or exhaust sensor?

should have an in line filter on the fuel line, when was it last changed? they sometimes clog up; usually easy to change as DIY job

Thanks for all the suggestions, i am considering disconnectiong any sensors i can find to try to eliminate the problem. the car was recently parked pointing uphill overnight,(on only a very slight gradient) and then refused to fire, it eventually went. I have since experimented with the car and it always fires in the morning if parked pointing downhill and only eventually fires if left pointing uphill. this suggests the fuel is seeping back into the tank, do you think air is getting into the system to cause both problems ????

Had this on my 306.
Problem was an air leak in the filter bowl seal. New O ring fixed it.
When parked up hill the fuel can run back to the tank drawing air in. The leak was not large enough for fuel to leak.
