I have a real loud cracking noise from the exhaust both when heating up and cooling down; started a couple of weeks ago. Now I know that exhausts normally just tick when they're cooling down, but this is far noisier and even made a little old lady jump when I dropped 'er indoors off in town the other day. I took it to my local one man garage who recently did the cambelt, but even he's at a bit of a loss as to what's causing it. It runs perfectly but I just can't live with the noise. Even my 2 springers can't wait to get out! Any ideas guys?
TIA
Paul

Quick update for anyone interested! Turns out it was because I'd filled it up with 95 octane unleaded when my usual Shell garage had run out of 97 octane which is what I always use. Yes I know it's designed to run on min 95 but it runs much better on the premium stuff for some reason. Ah well, we live and learn.

is it in any way connected with moisture? an exhaust can trap water and this can make a clacking sound when it boils (bit like a wet pan on a hot stove - but louder)
only thing i can think of!

Can't see it being moisture related as it doesn't use any coolant plus it gets a good run every day. The exhaust is still under warranty so it looks like a trip back there is on the cards.
