ST220 Starter and Flywheel
Discussion
After a bit of advice regarding my 04 plate ST220. Couple of days ago it wouldnt start sounded like the starter motor wasnt engaging. Managed to bump start and took it to a garage. Received a phone call yesterday saying starter motor and dual-mass flywheel need replacing. Luckily its under warranty but not Ford warrranty its an independent one I took out from the car dealership I bought it from as the original Ford one had expired.
Anyway the garage claim they can replace the flywheel without removing the gearbox, does anyone know if this is possible on the ST220 (it has the 6speed box- Getrag unit I think?)
Also would the clutch require changing if the flywheel is being replaced?

How the fook are they going to remove the flywheel and clutch assembly without removing the transmission??!! Impossible i'd say, as for the clutch it would make sense to replace it at the same time.
Exactly what I was thinking. Needless to say they wont be doing the work its now at my local Ford dealers. Starter, Flywheel and clutch. £1074 inc VAT glad i took out extended warranty My mates 220 got new starter/clutch a wee while ago quoted £900 from ford to fit, he did it himself with a mate (both mechanics) but still took several hours.
The flywheel/clutch and starter got changed just incase as he heard of garages just doing clutch friction and then afterwards finding it wasn't working so he played safe, still hurt the wallet thou.

This is very common on all late Mondeos the dual mass starts to fail and all the metal filings fill up the starter and burn it out (more common on diesals).
The gearbox has to be split from the engine but not completely removed as there is 'just' enough room to push it back and get your hand in the hole and replace the clutch, flywheel and slave cylinder which saves an awful lot of work.

No removel of subframe and steering rack, driveshafts stay in box (saves mess with oil) gear cables, speedo & various other bits & bobs that go on gearbox but can move with it, knocks a few hours off the total job as long as you dont mind skinned knuckles. I have seen the clutch fitter at our place do one of these drive in drive out in 2.5 hrs!
