I have to replace the rocker cover gasket on my 190E, took all the hoses off and removed the nuts from the cover, but it does not want to come off. The Haynes manual says to use a mallet but I can't see whereabouts I can tap it off?

Any suggestions as to how I can get around this problem?

Make sure it's a rubber mallet, put a bit of padding in front and lightly tap the edges of the rocker cover..(Go easy)..probably the gasket has gone hard and stuck to both faces.........

Be patient, it should come in time.....

Get a thin kitchen knife, nothing too sharp, and work it carefully into the joint and then along until you break the seal with the gasket. Be careful not to damage any aluminium faces. Once you've got a corner lifted it should come away easily.

If you are feeling brave or foolish I have seen a very unusual method on a 450 sl merc (1980`s)which involved filling the cam cover with lighter gas and then lighting it, dangerous but it worked a treat.

Sounds like a good way to loose your eyebrows..hehe

I would stick with the thin knife method.

Best way to remove anything with oil inside is to put on a really nice white shirt then try again...it'll soon be free!

Got it off and replaced the gasket.

My first job fixing something on a car. Took me a while but it's not too hard.

Nothing is Matt, knowing how to do it is the hard bit.

Exactly, once the rocker cover is off it's only more nuts and bolts holding everything else together, lack of confidence and patience is most people's enemy once you get that far.

Infamous story of a guy with a printing press, new machine costing several million quid installed, problems on startup funny noises heard. 3 Service people from the supplying company cannot fix the machine. So they call round their distributors to see if they have experienced similar problems.

1 responds yes and they send their service person round, asks them to start the machine, listens etc, and asks them to start it in a specific way. Still nothing Hmm, he says...

Goes into his bag and fetches a hammer walks to a specific point on the machine and smacks it with a hammer, machine starts up and runs fine.

The distributor's service man sends them a bill £5000, they refuse to pay without a break down.

Call out fee £75
Wear and tear of tools £10.
Knowing where and how to hit machine with hammer £4915

They paid.
