Hi All.

I have a very annoying problem on my car...cant find what it is, and for some reason my car wont let (thats right) my mechanic (or any as it has seen three) find it either.

Few weeks ago after the first half hour driving, the car would rattle...the rattle was unnoticeable outside the car, just inside. The higher the revs were (even in neutral) the louder and faster the rattle was.
So we got a mechanic out to see it - one and a half hours later (including 45 minutes driving), the car wouldnt rattle!!!

Same day, later on, get in the car, 30 minutes later and the rattle is there again. The rattle would only disappear (or reset) if i turned the engine off and then back on again. THen its again, 30 minutes till it starts.

However...this week i went on the motorway, and something went "pop" whilst driving...sounded like a hollow pop, not a loud pop. Loud enough for me to hear. After that, the car showed a different noise...it is now more of a very silent whistle. The whistle comes in almost straight away providing I am at least 25 MPH. Never before...and it will be there.

I let the engine run last night, and popped listened for noises on the engine...apart from the engine sounding very tappety (thought it was unusual for a 53 reg), there is nothing else there.

Any ideas what it could be?

2 weeks ago I had the cambelt changed (the whole kit to be precise) and oils and filter and spark plugs.

I have also noticed, that the faster the car is going, the more gear stick vibrates.

It also has a horrib backbox on there...and the tyres are 25 miles new!!!

Pops and whistles would suggest the air intake somewhere (possibly emissions control). Just using a bit of Sherlock Holmes logic here, a loose hose clip (rattle) which in turn lead to a hose coming off (pop) and then a whistle as the air now is sucked/blown bypassing the normal route.
I assume this occurred after the cam belt and service and wasn't doing it before? Possibly airbox connection, maybe breather or other emissions control pipework that may have had to be removed for the cam belt/service work and weren't put back correctly. I'm not familiar with the Clio so can't comment further but that's where I'd start.
Gearstick rattle would most probably be the linkage or mounts, again I'm not familiar with the Clio which may have specific problems relating to it.
