Hello everyone,
Should the water pump on my car keep whirring after the ignition is turned off(as it does tonight for about five mins!). It's not something we've noticed before. Could it be a relay or software problem or is a new pump needed? Thanks James

You sure its the water pump? I've wired rad fans to do something similar, and the M100 Elan has a switch that will cycle water round the system once switched off to prevent excess heat

Hi welcome to PH, I'm sure the water pump on these is driven by the cam belt, so I think you must mean something else is whirring?
Can you describe exactly where this noise is coming from?

Hi thanks for the welcome, been surfing on here for ages just not got round to posting till now(only got the dull family wagon at the mo!).
Sorry to be so vague about the problem. I got a description of the problem down the phone from the wife from the swimming pool car park!
The noise seems to come from the black cylinder in the bottom left of the engine bay. The top is held on with torx bolts and has three(?) tubes going into the top. It lasts for about five minutes. The car has enough coolant and oil and seems to be running just fine. Thing is we've never noticed this before and the wife thinks she could smell a slight burning or hot smell but can't be sure. Got me worried as I don't want a massive bill for a rebuild if it is serious! Thanks James

Im not fully conversant with these cars, but it sounds like it may be the auxiliary heater at fault, a common fault I'm afraid.

If you google volkswagen webasto auxiliary heater, you will find out more.
