My Lancia Twin Cam engine is leaking oil from the base of the exhaust camshaft carrier box (quite common). I have a gasket and am about to replace it. Having had a TVR for the last two years, I've noticed they don't have any gaskets and rely on silicon sealant.

I am wondering, when I come to refit the camshaft carrier are there any sealants I could put onto the gasket to ensure a long term oil tight joint? Either a smear of silicon or one of the Hermetite products?

Thanks.

You can always use a silicon sealant to help..

If you do - just use the cheap clear silicon sealant from a DIY shop - it works just as well.

Use it sparingly .. excess could end up at the bottom of the sump and cause the oil strainer to get blocked.. as cause an engine failure.

It also can cause gaskets to move around - due to it's slippery nature .. so care needs to be taken during assembly and clamp down.

A light smear of Hylomar Blue on most gaskets has never failed me. It's also oil fuel and coolant resistant.

If its a modern car (lancia so prob not an issue) & has a catalyst you should use a silicone free sealant.
