Volvo 460 interior heater grr

Ok having had this car for some time now I decided to try to see why the interior fan doesnt work at all.
I first gained access to the fan & disconnected the plug - I then put a cable direct from the battery to the fan, hey presto it works fine.
Next I put the multimeter into the connection feeding the motor. I turn on the fan from the switch and there is no increase in voltage.
Next I check the fan switch fuse - all fine.
One thing when the lights are on & its night the heater part of the console is dark. The heated seats do light up a little though.
So I attempted to take the heater controls out. I praised all the other bits out but could I get the heater control out... nope. So Im stuck - What would you advise, car's value is probably £400.

So it's either the switch is burned out or there's no voltage actually reaching the switch. Either of those is easy to test.
There are 3 dials all twist to operate - one fan speed, one airflow direction and the other temp. This is totally dark.I'd guess its no voltage reaching the switch.... maybe thats a simple plug thats been pulled apart/broken & fallen apart or a loose connection which will be fun finding.

Thats what my old man recommended.I guess you'd attach the flexi cable directly to the battery and then drill a hole in the bulkhead/try to find some access.
Then get a cheap switch take out the male cables from the socket and put in the new cable. Then the fan could stay max speed on or fully off.
Your "£400 car?" made me realise that were probably going to keep her till she dies in which case what does it matter or if not anyone complaining about a switch which does work for a peanuts car isnt a serious buyer.
The air direction and temperature dials just move flaps, or at they do in most cars. The fact the dash is dark there probably just means a bulb has blown and is unlikely to have anything to do with the fan.
Put an ohmeter across the switch. Do you get continuity in any of the positions? If you do then the switch is ok but no voltage is reaching it. Like you say maybe a connector somewhere or a break in a wire. Might be easier to just run another wire to the switch than find the break.
