actuating a single injector?
Discussion
I'm currently working on a project with a couple of mates and we are fitting a diesel injector to the engine (not a diesel engine and not injecting diesel) for a secondary fuel.
now the injector just needs to be actuated for a single set period of time throughout the whole rev range initially. in simplest terms what will be required in order to do this? automotive electronics really aren't my strong point at all. if it was a petrol injector i would have just linked my megasquirt and got on with it.
in terms of sensors the engine has none at the moment, the easiest way to have a position sensor would be a cam sensor.
thanks in advance

Do you have any idea how the diesel injector works? I don't, but perhaps it's basically similar to a petrol injector in which case it's probably driven in the same way. If you don't know either then I suggest you measure the resistance, and if it's over 10 Ohms I've stick 12V on it and see whether it opened. If it does, I'd treat it just like a petrol injector. If not, you have a bit more exploring to do...
cheers for the replies guys.
we are aware that the diesel injectors use the fuel as a lubricant, its something we are working on but the reason for using a diesel injector is the requirement to inject directly into the combustion chamber.
V8S i'll have a quick try on an injector today although i believe they are low impedence.

If it's low impedance you will need a 'peak and hold' driver. I haven't used one of these, but I seem to remember seeing them mentioned in the MegaSquirt docs and I thought it was possible to configure it to drive them. You'd need to check the peak current requirements of the injector. For petrol, 'low impedance' means 2-3 Ohms and if yours is in that range I would have thought you could drive it via MS. If it's much lower I guess you'd need to go through an extra driver.ccharlie6 said:

Common rail injectors are self lubricating, they also use some of the flow/pressure for operation which may hinder your concept.
