Coil pack replacement

Just had a diagnostic on my E60 5 series due to an engine fault light, it appears 2 coil packs have expired.

The garage has suggested I replace all 8 in one go, would anyone know the technical reason for doing so?

Your garage probably would, if you asked them.

If I had to guess, I'd say because they are probably all of a similar age and have seen the same wear and tear so if two have gone the others may not be long for this world. I think I'd rather ask them rather than guess, though.

I will ask them, just dont want to be fobbed off, so was looking for an unbiased answer on here.

i think i would take my chances on changing just to two myself. They are easy to do also, so dont get ripped for more than an hours labour i would of thought.

If two have gone, then any of the other six could go at anytime and running it with one or more faulty coils can spike the ECU and or cause damage to the catalyst.

DOnt think it would do huge damage to the CAT, but I have seen instances where dodgy ignition systems have damaged ecu's

Although they were on dodgy french cars.

THey can't prike the ECU ..

It's only 12V.. they are energised all the time .. the ECU just provides an earth when it's time for them to fire.
