The speedo in my G33 has stopped working, its a smiths instruments classic type speedo. I have now remopved the speedo and when drivingh i notice that the end of the speedo cable doesnt revelve and I would have expected it toi.
Is this right? If it should revelve what are the likely causes/cures?
Thanks in advance
Nick

The speedo cable wont turn, if the car isnt moving ( assuming its still attached to gearbox/diff )
If the driven wheels are turning, then the speedo cable would turn.
as already said above but just check the inner cable hasn't come out of the gearbox drive when you pulled it off the speedo.hthIf the driven wheels are turning, then the speedo cable would turn.
You may find the cable has broken because, as you say, it should be going round if the car is moving. If you can turn it with your fingers then something is broken lower down. Can you draw it out? If so then try pushing it down while twisting it as the square end may just have disengaged at the bottom.
If you can still turn it despite the above then disconnect it at the gearbox. You may then have a 1" piece of the cable inner in your hand. What often happens is the cable corrodes and locks up in the outer. When you next drive it shears off. Can also freeze and break in the winter.
If when you remove at the bottom you should be able to turn it freely. If it is intact then the drive gear may be worn and stripped as it is usually nylon or SRBF (synthetic Resin Bonded Fibre).
