Anyone good with gearboxes?
Discussion
I'm looking to replace the Final Drive on my Mr2 box and i need to check i have the correct parts here to do the swap.
Am i correct in thinking i need the following parts :
A = The crownwheel
B = The pinion (?)

And will the pinion (?) come off this end with a puller or will it need to come off the other end of the shaft after i've removed the rest of the gears?

Anything i've missed that i'll need to do the swap into my Mr2 box. Both gearboxes are S-series so i know they're compatible, just not sure what parts i need to swap.
Cheers,
Olie

Hmmm, i'm not fussed about the rest of the parts in the picture as these are off the scrap box.
I'm thinking if i can take all the component parts i want swapped into the new box, i.e the Final drive, pinion and also LSD, to a gearbox builders it'd work out cheaper than getting them to strip it down aswell?
I could happily grind off the shaft if it means i can get at the pinion. Is that an option?
Cheers for your help folks.

don't grind off the shaft as these can wear too i would personaly take the bits/gearbox along to gear box specialist or even a toyota dealer and get them to do it as they know the req measurements and offer some sort of garrantyI'm thinking if i can take all the component parts i want swapped into the new box, i.e the Final drive, pinion and also LSD, to a gearbox builders it'd work out cheaper than getting them to strip it down aswell?

If you're asking us then honestly you shouldn't be doing the work.
It looks like the final drive gear on the diff is shrunk on, so putting a new one on will require a furnace for the gear and a freezer for the diff.
The transmission output shaft almost certainly has the gear cut into it, so to make a ratio change you need a new output shaft.
Take it to somebody who knows what they're doing.

From the photos there looks to be a smooth radiused edge between the gear and bearing surface suggesting its all one piece. You would normally cut small gears like that as part of the shaft.
The ring of bolts on the diff would suggest the crown wheel is bolted to it however.
Yes we can remove the crownwheels easily as we do that when we put the Mk3 LSD's into the Mk2 boxes, that bit's not a problem, was just the pinion i was really wondering about.
You're correct on me not knowing, that's why i asked. If i could save myself money by simply removing the pinion then that's what i'd do.
Thanks for your input though folks, i'll put that crownwheel on a Mk3 LSD and hand that plus the whole shaft assembly to a gearbox builder and let them do their thing.

You can bet the person who knows what they are doing did not learn by sending it to another person who knows what they are doing. Ask your questions and have a go mate.It looks like the final drive gear on the diff is shrunk on, so putting a new one on will require a furnace for the gear and a freezer for the diff.
