Hi,
Newbie here.
I have a 205 gti with a 306 gti6 engine fitted. Is is worth fitting a 6 speed 306gti6 gearbox or not? or more to the point can it be done?
thanks

Yes it can be done, but you can't get full lock and there isn't really any performance advantages as the 1.9 g/box is pretty short already.

The 6 speed doesn't have a long sixth for motorway cruising which is the usual reason for fitting them, 6th is very similar to 5th on a BE3.

I think that my gox is an early BE1 with reverse left and up. How can i tell if this is a 1.6 or 1.9 box? And are the internals from the BE1 & 3 the same?

The ratio's are the same for 3rd, 4th and 5th between the two gearboxes but they have different final drives which is what makes the 1.6 shorter.

At 80mph with 1.6 g/box you will be doing approx 4300rpm

With a 1.9 g/box you will be doing approx 3800rpm.

i've done it.
I enjoyed it on the open roads but it was a bit st for T junctions and tight manouvers.
A 1.9 with 1.6 final drive gives the same thrill with less weight and no lock issues.

You will need a BE1 gearlever mechanism and lift up reverse, you will also need to swap the clutch arm so you can run the standard clutch mechanism and cable, a gearlinkage arm and swap the speedo mechanism.

Obviously fit a stop to the steering rack to pass an mot as the wheel will be able to hit the casing.
