Hi All.smile

I have a Gilbern Invader MkII and it has an LSD in the diff. The rear axle is from an MGC. I'm currently changing the gearbox and clutch and noticed that there appears to be a lot of backlash if you turn the propshaft backwards and forwards. Is this normal? If it is a sign of wear and needs rebuilding or adjusting, can someone post suitable contacts to talk to and get help or advice. Or point me in the right direction to download pictures of the diff in parts and how to adjust/shim it, etc.

Thanks Guys,byebye
Wayne.

Totally and utterly normal. As long as it isn't howling on acceleration or decelleration (or knocking from missing teeth) then don't worry about it at all.

Of course from your description no idea if your LSD is functioning as it should.

Two questions here, one is the backlash in the pinion & crownwheel, the other is whether the LSD works.
As Oliver said if the diff is quiet & doesn't howl like a dog or conk, going from power to over run, then it's probably OK.
As for the LSD, then jack up one wheel & put a torque wrench on it & see what the torque figures it is when it releases & slips. You'll have to talk to a specialist to find out what the normal build figure is.

Think I did it right....does 50Nm sound right or 37lbs. The diff sounds fine when driving, there was a clonk on take up, but that was prob down to worn UJ that I've just replaced in prop.

wayne.

Bit on the low side even for a road diff, but better than nowt. I'd have expected 50-60 ft/lb but this is from memory, it is a looonnng time since I did any of these.
